We Started off with a bird composition in titled, “Cool Blues”.
Herb Lewis can in and helped us play a cool version of “Joy Spring”
We then made a left turn and played a calypso tune, “Fuju Mama” with Charles Bartlett (trumpet), Richie & Sir Charles (Congas) stepping up to the bandstand to join us.
Stephanie Jeanot got up made the music take a right turn and wiggle by singing , “People make the world go round” , “Ain’t Misbehavin'” and Chaka Khan’s, “Through The Fire”
Male singer Mac took us a little sideways by singing a classic R&B tune by Major Harris, “Love Won’t Let Me Wait”
As we were ending the set with and straighting out with the grover Washington tune, “Mister Magic”, members of the group “Crown Heights Affair” came through played a little and helped Wayne celebrate his birthday!
What happened next, only the people who were their will know!! do you?

Wednesday Night Jazz! Leave a comment
Last night was the open mic at the Proper Café at 217-01 Linden blvd in Cambria Heights. The house band was Jazz w/Attitude, with Jeff Sheloff (sax) and Wayne Holmes (keys). Also in the band were Dave Jones (bass) and John Doty (drums)
Some of the tunes that were played were “What is This Thing Called Love”, Ornithology, “All The Things You Are” & “Blue Bossa” A trumpet player came in and brought a little kid down, I think his name was Keyshon. The kid played drums and they wanted to know if we could play a Blues. Jeff said “no problem” and the trumpet player counted it off. The kid was swingin’! He keep the tempo steady through a couple of solos and took one his self!! He was only 12!!!! He had a big smile on his face. He’s hooked!!
The next set featured Ajax of the 70’s group Crown Heights Affair singing the classic George Benson song, ”This Masquerade”, followed by some more standard tunes, Autumn Leaves, “Scrapple From the Apple”, to name just a few. The night ended with Wayne sing Stevie Wonder’s tune “Higher Ground”
We would like the usual suspects for coming out, Herb Lewis, & Frank (sax), Tony Bracco & Ajax (trumpets) Keith Jordan (guitar). We also had some new kats coming down, Will Jhun, (Sax), Ryan Messina (sax), and David Bertrand (flute) (he didn’t even need the mike!)
The proper café is not only a go place to hear and play good music, it also excellent for the drinks and food. So I hope you can make the next one, ’cause as Winky use to say,
“we took it to the cosmos”!
