The first stop was by The Creative Jazz Organization at The American Legion at 204th street and Linden blvd. Cambria hts., Queens.
The house band was Ron Service host and Sax & flute, Wayne Holmes on piano,
Mike Fitzbenjamin on Bass, and Butch Bateman on Drums.
A harmonica player came up and played “Stormy Monday”, I did a tune made famous by Wes Montgomery “Road Song” , Wayne sang a Ray Charles ( I don’t remember the name of the tune!) but it was good.
Jeff Stills who is also was one of the jamaica jazz kats came up and played a blues. Unfortunately for most of you, he’s relocating to Agusta ,GA.
One time I ask him if I could sit in when was going to play. He said, ” as long as you don’t play better than me!”
He will be missed.
Up next do the road a bit was the Jazz w/atitude band with Jeff (T.Sax), Dave (Bass) Mike (drums) and Curt Fowler (piano).
Some of the tunes we played were “Recordame” , Rhythm-ing”.
Frank (tenor), herb (tenor) came up and played on, “What is This Thing Called love” and “Body and Soul”.
Kevin Austin (drums) and kathy Brown (Keys) came through and played on the energetic “St. Thomas” Along with Ajax and Tony (Trpt) who came in and out!!
If I left anyone out for give me, but when you’re having a good time it’s hard to write it all down!
hopefully anyone I missed will be following the blog and correct me!!
I’ll see ya when I see ya!!
